A 'Trek' with the Fujifilm X-T3 and Godox iT30Pro
Recovering from a muscular injury meant that a routine uphill walk to my local landmark felt more like one of my more serious treks through the mountains.

Shooting Island Erosion
When I spent a few hours on a small island near my home I was struck by the extent of the erosion. There was clear evidence of very rough weather down through the years.

The AA Book of the Car
When I came on the 1977 edition of the AA Book of the Car buried in a cupboard it brought back memories of tinkering with cars in all weathers to save me a bob or two at the garage.

Reviving a 2009 5MP Phone JPEG
Back in 2009 I used my Nokia 6700 mobile phone to capture a midwinter scene. The image above is a crop of the original 5MP landscape image which I have now lost.

The Lugnaquilla Indicator
In early August 2005 my wife and I enjoyed a dawn hike to the top of Lugnaquilla in County Wicklow.

Ask AI: How to Maintain a Healthy Diet
For good intestinal health, it’s important to focus on foods that support a healthy gut microbiome, promote digestion, and reduce inflammation.

Video: Images Imagined
This short video brings together the best of my AI images most of which appear in the ImageTrek galleries. There are many photographers who strongly object to AI imagery because it imitates conventional photography. Without human creativity, they complain, AI images lack soul. AI images are based on the original work of photographers that exists online, we are warned. This is nothing other than blatant plagiarism by the backdoor! An AI image that resembles a photograph is ne

Turn a Smartphone Into Your Music Centre
Rather than relying on streaming services, I use an app on a smartphone to listen to my entire music and book collection. I’ve been using Poweramp (Android only) for a long time. It’s the best audio player I’ve found. Recently I invested in a new mid-range smartphone with 256GB of storage to use exclusively as an audio player. This should last me many years, if I do! All my MP3, M4A and WAV files (50+GB to date) have been copied into the phone’s internal storage. These files

AI and the Challenges of Non-photography
Is it OK for photographers to enjoy AI fiction? During a time when I was unavoidably at home a lot, I experimented with AI image-generation on ChatGPT, Sora and Midjourney. After a few months I was fascinated and entertained, but getting the results I wanted wasn't easy. It was a hit and miss process. ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer, if you please) was definitely better at interpreting my prompts but took its time doing it. Figuring out all the nuances of Mid

Bark Detail
I set up my Fujifilm X-T3 and 60mm macro lens to shoot a series of focus-bracketed images. It turned out I shot way too many! I only...

Using AI to Create an Album Cover
Before I took a break from AI image-generation, I used it to create this mock-up album cover in Affinity Photo 2.

Ramelton, County Donegal
This shot was captured by the Canon EOS 50 (below) on Fujifilm Reala film. I also used a flashgun tilted up slightly to bring out the colours in the overhanging autumn leaves. Reala was by far my favourite film. I usually shot it a stop over to maximise shadow detail. I used the Plustek OpticFilm 8100 scanner and SilverFast scanning software to get the most from the tonal range, then processed the 16-bit TIFF. "Our sharpest film" was Fujifilm's boast.
