In early August 2005 my wife and I enjoyed a dawn hike to the top of Lugnaquilla in County Wicklow. It was a warm morning with barely a breath of wind. We never met a soul and had the mountain to ourselves the whole time we were there.

After we had rested a while I climbed onto the nearby indicator and took a shot with my Canon EOS 300D. The indicator, erected in 1952, "shows the direction of the principal mountains etc. that are visible from the summit."

The image below is my attempt to wring as much detail as possible from the small digital image. Tap or click on it to see more detail. (On a computer you can click on it and then right-click to view it much larger in a new tab.) While I was first looking closely at the full-sized image on-screen I noticed the drawing top-left. I don't know if it's original, but I've enlarged it in a separate image. It has a charm worth preserving.
